Depression

Do you feel low, sad, numb, or lack motivation? Is it difficult to do the things that help you feel better? Do you isolate yourself? Do you have chronic pain?

Depression can look very different in different people. At its core, Depression is the manifestation of a set of beliefs about ourselves, and the world that are rigid, negatively
biased and cost us our physical and emotional health.

Some common beliefs in Depression: “ I am not good enough”, “I am bad”, “I am a failure”, “I am unlovable”, “I don’t deserve good things”, “I am powerless”…

These beliefs are created at an early age. Young children are constantly downloading, and interpreting information from their environment. These interpretations create a tapestry that we call self-esteem. Unfortunately, the conclusions that young children draw can be:

  1. Self-focused, for example: “If I was good enough my parents would not have gotten a divorce”
  2. Generalized, for example: “I fell off the swing, therefor it is not safe to take risks”
  3. Negatively biased, for example: “I broke a glass, therefor I am bad”
